Description

This piece was inspired by concepts I heard discussed on the Joe Rogan Podcast.

Although conspiratorial and controversial, some people believed that Christianity originally celebrated Christmas by taking psychedelic mushrooms. As crazy, and as counter culture as that sounds, the theory actually made sense the more I heard examples. I don't really believe one way or the other, nor do I claim to know as I'm not a scholar, but this is all very interesting to think about.

The little things we do for Christmas don't really make sense and are pretty random, until you think of what they could be symbolic of. The Amanita muscaria mushroom is a psychedelic mushroom that has a symbolic relationship with several trees, such as birch, pine, and spruce trees (the original Christmas tree). It grows beneath them (like presents) and is bright red and spotted white (like Christmas colors). Before taking these mushrooms, they would first need to be dried, one of two ways: Either by placing them on top of the branches (like ornaments) or heating them by the fireplace (like stockings).

Now whether or not this theory holds up, I don't care. It's awesome to think about, and it got me wondering… wow, from generation to generation, how much a culture can COMPLETELY lose sight of what its original intent was; basically telephone games.

What this piece is supposed to portray is someone taking a bite out of a Christmas ornament, and starting to hallucinate. As odd as that seems, that's exactly the point. We've come so far from the original idea; it turned into something that doesn't work anymore.

What this piece means to me is to not lose sight of the original purpose you had in life. Overtime you can get distracted and wonder off, and if left uncorrected, could leave you with a hollow ornament of what once was a magical thing.

Another thing is, a lot of people will fall in line and not acknowledge the truth in something that goes against their model of the world. With me making an art piece like this, people could assume I'm into drugs, and I'm not. That made me want to make this piece even more, because I love free expression, and that's lost when you start to think about what other people will think of you.
